1953 Muntz Jet

The Muntz Jet, “the first serious attempt in nearly a generation to manufacture an American sport car capable of measuring up to the top-flight European jobs“, wrote the Sport Cars and Hot Rods book in 1950 published by Fawcett Publications. The Muntz is a beautiful machine, built in practical fashion from dependable Ford and Cadillac components, with a high-grade custom body added. No one knows for sure how many Muntz were made, but it’s estimated that 394 Jets were built ; of these at least 49 survive today.
Earl ‘The Mad Man’ Muntz was the a typical entrepreneur. 
He began in radio in the early forties and started in 1949 selling the first televisions for mass market as a Dumont Television franchiser. 
As a result he made millions of dollars.
In 1950 Muntz ended up buying was a very intersting sports car that Frank had been playing with for the past several years. Muntz was so inpressed the he ended up buying the tools, dies and assests of the Kurtis firm. Kurtis stayed on with the project and he and Sam Hanks redesigned the original car to make it more acceptable to a greater number of buyers. Muntz named his car the Muntz Road Jet.

The body of the Road Jet was designed by Frank Kurtis and promoted by Mad Man Muntz. This example is a well preserved original with one of the best interior of its kind. It has never been painted or restored and believed to be entirely original.

The first 28 prototypes were made of aluminum with a 113 inch wheelbase and were powered by a 331 cid Cadillac V8. Body panels were aluminum based that formed over a steel cage subframe on a ‘X’ frame chassis. There is a four-speed Hydra-matic Automatic gearbox and an independent front suspension and a live-rear axle.

Cool Facts

After his success as a used car salesman and with Kaiser-Frazer dealerships in Los Angeles and New York City, Muntz founded the Muntz Car Company, which made the “Muntz Jet”, a sports car with jet-like contours.
